Program Description

420601 - Counseling Psychology

Peer Support Specialist is an occupational title for a person who has progressed in their own recovery from mental disorder and is working to assist other people with a mental disorder. Because of their life experience, such persons have expertise that professional training cannot replicate; this curriculum is designed to enhance the understanding of the procedures and tasks performed by peer support specialists; including how to assist clients in articulating their goals for recovery,helping them monitor their progress, ssisting them in their treatment, modeling effective coping techniques and self-help strategies based on the specialist's own recovery experience,and advocating for the client in obtaining effective services.This training is designed to serve people entitled to publicly funded services,and meets federal requirement for training and certification and placement in the VA. The graduates may work alongside or separately from other mental health professionals.
