Superintendent Horne’s Arts Education Initiative

Background

In his 2004 State of Education speech, Superintendent Horne stated:

"We must enrich every student with a thorough exposure to the arts. A student who has not been taught the deeper forms of beauty has not received an education. And numerous studies have shown that students involved in the arts actually perform better in other academic subjects."

The Arizona Department of Education has made arts education part of its comprehensive curriculum initiative as outlined in Superintendent Horne's State of Education speech.

Current Arts Education Initiative Projects and Opportunities

Promising Practices in Arts Education

In 2008, The Arizona Department of Education awarded Promising Practices Grants to 13 Arizona schools and districts to a) support their high quality work in arts education from assessment of student work to arts integration and b) document that work for sharing across the state via the web. Web-based products from these programs will be available here beginning August, 2009. So – check back! For a list of funded schools and districts, click here.

ARRA Title I (Stimulus) Funds Support Arts Integration

The Arizona Department of Education is encouraging Title I Schoolwide schools to consider using their ARRA or stimulus dollars to "jump start" a high quality arts integration reform approach to student learning and teacher practice.
