Response to Intervention (RTI)

IDEA '04 now allows for PEAs to choose to use a "Response to Intervention" Child Find process as part of the evaluation for Specific Learning Disabilities. If PEAs choose to use this process, the state requires that they use a set of specific scientifically based components and that the PEA submit a plan for approval by ADE/ESS prior to using that process to directly identify students for special education. ADE/ESS is assisting PEAs to implement this process in the following ways:

  • Provide school teams six days of training on the components of RtI
  • Provide coaches to each team for support in implementing the components at their site
  • Establish model sites for visitation
  • Provide a statewide database for progress monitoring data
  • Collaborate with Reading First and other general education initiatives using Curriculum Based Measures (CBM) data for instructional decisions
  • Provide a web site for ongoing RtI information (www.ade.az.gov/rti )
  • Provide information about RtI to stakeholder groups
