Using Close Reading in Connected Lessons- An Instructional Sequence
Day 1: Close Reading Training
Day 2: Socratic Seminar, EQuIP rubric training
Day 3: Planning three days of close reading lessons
Teachers will learn how to implement close reading routines in the classroom through text selection, engagement strategies, text dependent questions, and classroom discourse. They will focus on Socratic seminar as a method for student engagement in the close reading process. Teachers will evaluate exemplar close reading units using the EQuIP rubric to gain an understanding of the “shifts” required by the CCSS in planning reading and writing lessons. Finally, teachers will plan his/her own close reading lessons using a close reading lesson template.
Pre-requisites:
Common Core State Standard Phase I ELA Teacher Training
This training may be presented in grade level bands (K-2, 3_5, 6-8, and High School) or as a K-12 session.
