Special Engagement: Text Complexity and the Common Core with Doug Fisher
This is a phase 2 English Language Arts (ELA) professional development opportunity in collaboration with the Arizona K-12 Center that supports the content and instructional shifts that will impact classroom practice to ensure students are college and career ready.
John Doug Fisher, Co-author of Text Complexity: Raising Rigor in Reading and Teaching Students to Read Like Detectives, as he demonstrates literacy strategies to ensure that students learn to read increasingly complex texts, teachers have to understand what makes a text hard. The introduction of the Arizona Common Core State Standards has also placed a spotlight on text complexity. This book focuses on the quantitative and qualitative factors of text complexity as well as the ways in which readers can be matched with texts and tasks.
Examine how close readings of complex texts scaffold students' understanding and allow students at all grade levels to develop the skills necessary to read like detectives.
Registration includes training, materials, continental breakfast, lunch, and breaks. All participants will receive the book, Text Complexity: Raising Rigor in Reading, by Doug Fisher, Nancy Frey and Diane Lapp (2012).
