Teaching Reading Effectively - June 23-27, 2014
In support of A.R.S. 15-701 – Move On When Reading, and Arizona’s Common Core ELA standards, the Arizona Department of Education is extending its professional development content while remaining committed to building capacity as the local, regional and state level. Teaching Reading Effectively course is strongly aligned to the AZ Common Core Standards - ELA: Foundational Skills (K-5), Reading Standards for Literature and Informational Text (K-5) and Language Standards (K- 5). The content includes current research and evidence based practices that are necessary for the development of the technical skills of reading along with academic vocabulary and deep comprehension. Important components of an effective comprehensive reading program designed to develop proficient readers, competent writers and critical thinkers are included in this material. While the training is designed for K-5 instruction, it provides excellent information for K-3 Teachers and Special Education Teachers K-12 implementing school and district literacy plans. Units to include:
- Foundations of Reading
- Learning to Read and Spell: A National Problem and Recommended Solutions
- Basic Principals of Reading Assessment
- The Structure of Language
- Graphophonemic Awareness
-Teaching Word Identification and Spelling Fluency
- Vocabulary
-Comprehension to summarizing

Participants will be provided with supporting reference books (assessment and instruction).

You must attend all five days: June 23-27, 2014


Registration opens at 8:00am

Breakfast and Lunch will be provided.

Registration will close two weeks prior to event date. No PO number is required to complete registration.

Event times: 8:30am-4:00pm.

Please note: All conference attendees are required to park in the visitor side of the 3300 parking garage in spaces marked Visitor, and in open non-reserved spaces. Please bring your parking ticket with you to your conference for validation; it will be the responsibility of the attendee to pay the parking fee if their ticket is not validated.

Please inform your Business Office of your registration promptly. A confirmation number may be required on the day of the event and should also be included on your purchase order. A registration fee is charged for all registrants, including those who do NOT SHOW and have not canceled in writing within 10 business days prior to event start date. All cancellations and or replacements must be received in writing within 10 business days prior to the first day of the workshop for a refund. *Exceptions may be made for emergency situations only up to the first day of event start date. *At the discretion of Arizona Department of Education staff, 'emergency situations' are defined as: illness, accident, etc.  

Who Should Attend: While the training is designed for K-5 instruction, it provides excellent information for K-3 Teachers and K-12 Special Education Teachers implementing school and district literacy plans.
