Keeping Up with the Kinder Academy
The Kinder Academy is a face-to-face training designed for new Structured English Immersion (SEI) Kindergarten teachers for the current school year. The SEI Models require SEI teachers to provide daily English Language Development (ELD) in Reading, Writing, Oral English Conversation and Vocabulary, and Grammar. Participants will learn how to use the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards to plan for ELD instruction which includes many ELD strategies, such as scaffolding and grouping structures for English language learners in an SEI kindergarten classroom. Participants will also consider on-going assessment to guide instruction. Participants will receive a resource entitled: Kindergarten Literacy by Anne McGill-Franzen.

A Kinder Academy webinar series began in July 2013 and extends through December 2013; each webinar focused on explicit instruction, used the ELP standards in Stage I and each of the SEI Time Allocations. The information shared in the webinar series provides a foundation for this face-to-face training and although we recommend that you view the webinars, it is not a requirement for this training.

Recorded webinars are located on the OELAS website http://www.azed.gov/english-language-learners/eld_pd/upcoming-webinars/. Through engaging hands-on activities, participants will be provided the opportunity to design lessons utilizing research-based methods of instruction for English language learners shared by experts in the field, such as: Kate Kinsella, Lilly Wong Fillmore, Sylvia Linan-Thompson, Sharon Vaughn, Louisa Moats, Marilyn Jager Adams, and Barbara R. Foorman.

Foorman.
