Do you have students in your class who need an ILLP (Individual Language Learner Plan) and you have no idea where to start? This webinar will guide you through the ILLP creation and revision process. Topics will include:

    Verb Tense Study
    This workshop will focus on Verb Tense Study as a methodology that provides K-12 SEI Teachers with a way to explicitly teach verb tenses, identified in the English Language Proficiency Standards, during the SEI Models Grammar block. Verb tenses are critical for English language learners and their acquisition of the English language and ultimately reading comprehension and academic writing. Whether you are familiar with the Verb Tense Study or a newcomer, participants will receive explicit instruction and practice in order to immediately begin this methodology upon returning to the classroom. Additionally, trainers will demonstrate how math, science, or social studies content can be used in instruction of this very powerful methodology. Participants will be provided with a grammar resource entitled: The Painless, Plan-less Grammar Guide by Janelle Cameron and Kevin Clark.

    This one-day workshop is designed for new ELL Coordinators. The Boot Camp will provide attendees the knowledge to build a compliant and effective ELL program.

    Grammar Foundations Series Part II of II
    This workshop is a continuation of the Grammar Foundations series and will build upon a teacher’s grammar knowledge and skills. The training will introduce additional grammar terms, grammatical structures, and grammar instruction beyond what was shared in Grammar Foundations 1. Participants will: • locate grammar skills in the ELP Language Standards
    • receive instructional strategies on how to explicitly teach the 8 parts of speech (including sub-category) and sentence construction
    • explore more complex skills with nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns
    • understand the form, meaning and use of a variety of grammar structures
    • reflect upon personal awareness of language
    • use English grammar terms more confidently
    A grammar text resource will be provided to participants.

    Listening and Speaking in the K-5 SEI Classroom**
    **Optional as a Trainer-of-Trainers model of Professional Development (see website for more details). This session will focus on building teacher knowledge and skills for explicit instruction required for ELLs to develop productive and receptive language to be successful in the classroom. Teachers will understand the need for planning and strategic grouping for authentic engagement in structured conversations while using the English Language Proficiency Standards in the domain of listening and speaking to guide instruction. The training will demonstrate best practices for instruction from articulation to oral presentations while also considering the use of formative assessments. Participants will make connections to ACCS while building a foundation for ELLs.

    Vocabulary in the K-5 SEI Classroom**
    **Optional as a Trainer-of-Trainers model of Professional Development (see website for more details). This foundations workshop will focus on building teacher knowledge and skills for explicit vocabulary instruction for ELLs while also developing a personal awareness to academic register. Participants will understand the components of a vocabulary plan/routine and the connection to reading. Children at this age readily learn words from books read to them and books they read, as well as from the rich conversations about these texts. A critical component of vocabulary development is building rich and flexible word knowledge. This training will demonstrate best practices for instruction using ELP Standards from identifying meaning and usage of high frequency words to grade specific academic vocabulary. Participants will receive a vocabulary resource entitled: Teaching Vocabulary to English Language Learners by Michael F. Graves, Diane August, and Jeannete Mancilla-Martinez.

    Writing Foundations for SEI K-2 Teachers
    This workshop will focus on evidence-based practices for foundational writing instruction (penmanship, spelling, punctuation, grammar application, and sentence construction) during the writing time allocation in K-2 Structured English Immersion classrooms. Connections will be made to the English Language Proficiency Standards and ELL research by Robin Scarcella, Carol Booth Olson, and Tina Matuchniak. This training is modeled after K-2 ELA training and includes the research noted in the text Best Practices in Writing Instruction edited by Steve Graham, Charles A. MacArthur, and Jill Fitzgerald. Participants will receive a copy of the text to build knowledge of research, assessment, and instructional strategies for classroom implementation as well as identifying appropriate technology for early learners.

    Writing About Texts for ELL Students Grades K-2
    Writing about Texts is designed for SEI classroom teachers, teachers with ILLPs, and ELL coaches and administrators and is based on research that indicates explicit connections between reading and writing. This Phase II training will focus on enhancing the writing of English language learners with effective instructional practices and maintain the relationship between AZCCRS and ELPS. Writing about texts deepens reading and writing skills and this session will explore research-based practices to reduce the constraints which challenge ELL students as writers. Participants will receive Best Practices in Writing Instruction with emphasis on research by Tim Shanahan, Carol B. Olson, Robin Scarcella, and Tina Matuchniakl.

    Close Reading in the 3-12 SEI Classroom
    This Phase II training will address the Instructional Shifts in ELA that will impact the instruction for English language learners. The workshop will use modeling and various activities to demonstrate a close reading routine teachers can use with students to help them become independent readers and thinkers about text. In addition to the reading routine, participants will learn how to select texts appropriate for close reading and write text dependent questions. Participants will also learn methodologies to support classroom discussion and writing about text. The workshop will focus on the research of Fillmore and Kinsella in addition to The Thinker’s Guide to How to Read a Paragraph - The Art of Close Reading by Paul and Elder and Text Complexity: Raising Rigor in Reading by Fisher, Frey and Lapp.

    Methodologies
    This workshop will focus explicitly on five high-powered methodologies that provide strategies to promote language development skills during the four hour SEI Model. Additional methodologies will be introduced to further support teachers in facilitating language growth and development. The high-powered methodologies were originally designed to support the elements of phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon, and semantics as the foundational skills for proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening. This Methodologies training builds upon this purpose by making clear connections between the high-powered methodologies and English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) as well as demonstrating how math, science, or social studies content can be used to increase the purposefulness and effectiveness of the high-powered methodologies within ELD instruction.

    Multisensory Grammar

This session will focus on building teacher knowledge and skills for explicit instruction required for ELLs to develop productive and receptive language to be successful in the classroom. Teachers will understand the need for planning and strategic grouping for authentic engagement in structured conversations while using the English Language Proficiency Standards in the domain of listening and speaking to guide instruction. The training will demonstrate best practices for instruction from articulation to oral presentations while also considering the use of formative assessments. Participants will make connections to ACCS while building a foundation for ELLs.

    Vocabulary in the K-5 SEI Classroom**
    **Optional as a Trainer-of-Trainers model of Professional Development (see website for more details). This foundations workshop will focus on building teacher knowledge and skills for explicit vocabulary instruction for ELLs while also developing a personal awareness to academic register. Participants will understand the components of a vocabulary plan/routine and the connection to reading. Children at this age readily learn words from books read to them and books they read, as well as from the rich conversations about these texts. A critical component of vocabulary development is building rich and flexible word knowledge. This training will demonstrate best practices for instruction using ELP Standards from identifying meaning and usage of high frequency words to grade specific academic vocabulary. Participants will receive a vocabulary resource entitled: Teaching Vocabulary to English Language Learners by Michael F. Graves, Diane August, and Jeannete Mancilla-Martinez.

Ideas will be provided on how to support ELLs who are on an ILLP (Individual Language Learner Plan) within the framework of an instructional day.     Close Reading in the K-2 SEI Classroom
    This Phase II training will address the Instructional Shifts in ELA that will impact the instruction for English language learners. The workshop will model and use various activities to demonstrate a close reading as an instructional support and practice routines that teachers can use with all proficiency levels. Participants will gain understanding of text complexity and text selection appropriate for close reading and writing and how to recognize text dependent questions. The workshop will focus on the research of Fisher, Frey, Fillmore, and Kinsella. Participants will receive an informational text for use in classroom instruction.

    Grammar Foundations Series Part I of II
    Demonstrating command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking are essential components of the ELP Language Standards. This one-day workshop will focus on building teacher knowledge of basic grammar terms, grammatical structures, and grammar instruction. By the end of the course you should be able to:
    • use English grammar terms more confidently
    • understand the form, meaning and use of a variety of grammar structures
    • reflect upon your awareness of language

    Participants will receive a copy of Painless Grammar by Rebecca Elliott, Ph.D.

    2014 OELAS Conference - Empowering Literacy through Language
    The 2014 OELAS Conference focuses on empowering literacy for our English language learners through masterful and explicit language instruction. Sessions will provide continuing professional development and skills to effectively deliver this instruction. Best practices as demonstrated by Arizona's school districts and charter schools will continue to be showcased as we polish and celebrate our success and continue to look for ways to improve and exceed expectations.

    This year we are excited to kick off the conference with a keynote address by Jeff Charbonneau, the 2013 National Teacher of the Year and we will conclude the conference with a powerful message by renowned speaker, LTC Consuelo Castillo Kickbush, Retired. Dynamic sessions will again feature Kevin Clark, Kate Kinsella, Heidi Koski, Tim Shanahan, Kylene Beers, and Bob Probst as well as newcomer William van Cleave and many others. The conference will again include ELL Success Stories, honoring the achievements of Arizona's ELL students. Students will be recognized in a presentation following lunch on Thursday, December 11.

    The presentation and banquet to honor the 2014 Arizona ELL Teacher of the Year (TOY) will take place on Wednesday evening, December 10, and is included in your registration fee as long as you register at the ELL Teacher of the Year online registration page. When you register for the TOY event, you will need to enter your conference confirmation number in the payment blank instead of a payment number. A portion of your registration fee will be used to support the ELL Teacher of the Year program. Do not forget to register separately online for this important event in order to receive an admission ticket.

    Note: You must make your guest room reservations before November 7, 2014 to receive the conference rate of $83 per night. The conference rate is also based on availability. Wireless internet access will be available in the meeting rooms if you choose to view handouts on your computers. Paper copies of the handouts will not be available in the meeting rooms.

    2014 Arizona ELL Teacher of the Year Registration (Banquet Only)
    The 2014 'Arizona ELL Teacher of the Year' award and banquet will take place on Wednesday evening, December 10, 2014 at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Tucson. This marks the tenth annual OELAS award and celebration. Known for their dedication and inspiration, these ELL teachers are engaged in the day-to-day work of ensuring that ELL students are able to acquire and become proficient in English and achieve future academic success. This honor has been developed to both recognize a single award winner and celebrate all Arizona ELL teachers.

    No additional payment is required if you have already registered for the 2014 OELAS conference. You must enter your OELAS conference confirmation number in the payment number section to receive complimentary admission along with an admission ticket to the banquet. Without prior conference registration, the cost is $55.00 per person. We must emphasize that your registration is a commitment to attend. If you are not sure that you will attend, we suggest that you retain your conference confirmation number and register for the ELL Teacher of the Year event when you are sure about your attendance.     Multisensory Grammar
    This session will provide Mainstream K-3 teachers, ELL teachers, K-12 special education teachers, interventionists, reading teachers and coaches the basic knowledge of the parts of speech (grammar) and the essential structure of a sentence (syntax). The foundational skills are presented in a sequential order using multisensory approach to help students acquire our English language and literacy skills.

    Participants will:
    • Understand the importance of teaching grammar components through multisensory strategies.
    • Learn how to teach the eight parts of speech
    • Learn sequential steps for teaching sentence construction.
